Ive spent about a month with my iTouch, and I thought Id give my opinion on it, for those looking to drop some coin into a music player.
I guess Ill get the negatives out there first. Dont let those get you down, though. The DRM really stings you. This may not be a problem to most who have a permanent computer, but Im constantly switching computers. And if I go to a friends house, I want to charge my iTouch off their computer. If you plug the iTouch into someones computer AND they have iTunes installed, itll likely render all your iTunes Store music/video purchases useless. Theyll be there for you if you manage to get the iPod back to a computer you authorized with your account, but if not, you are SOL. Your DRMed purchases will be totally broken. Thanks Carlos: I should point out that I am talking about iTunes Wi-Fi store purchases. No disk access without some hacking. With my 5G iPod, I could just enable disk mode, enable hidden files In Windows, or Senuti it Mac to copy music from the iPod. In order to just get disk access, you have to jailbreak it. I know 8GB is really not enough to justify disk mode, but if the nanos have it, why not the iTouch? The touch screen can sometimes flip out. I cannot count on my hands how many times I drag the volume slider and it goes the opposite direction in which I am dragging it, effectively blowing out my ears. Or sometimes, unless I lick my fingers, it wont even detect my taps. Now some of the positives: No annoying shutdown bug. YES I hated this in the older iPods, where you would go to shut it down Hold Play for a couple secs, and it refuses to shut down. The iTouch shuts down if you smack the button at the top, and does NOT give you lip. Lovely. Durability. The touch screen is not easily damaged, and I noticed that while it does have some scratches, it DOES NOT show on the screen, unless I have the screen shut off and Im looking at it in bright light. My 5G would scratch just spending a second in my pocket. Best mobile internet. I use safari a lot, when I am on the road with no computer. A browser that actually works. An awesome wardriving companion. Just duck into Settings>WiFi, and itll search for networks for your bandwidth-jacking pleasure. Some other things I noticed: The battery. I wonder, if Apple can add a bit of plastic to the metal casing for the wifi antenna and make it look elegant, why couldnt Apple pull off the same for a removable iPod battery? Itd make things easier. But then again, the 50 Apple wants for battery swaps isnt bad for a device like this. But for iPod nanos, it cant be justified. My grade out of 10? 8. Its perfect, but there are flaws there, which are software problems, which Apple can likely fix with a software update in the future. |
